Morgan Rielly Maple Leafs: Defenseman Expects to Stay

Morgan Rielly Maple Leafs trade talk just ran into the man himself. Speaking Wednesday in Brampton, Ontario, the veteran defenseman told NHL.com he expects to remain with Toronto in 2026-27 after a summer of speculation. “It means more to me to be with this organization than it ever has,” Rielly said. “I think that's because I've had a lot of time for reflection. In the end, you end up feeling more grateful and more excited.”

TSN's Mark Masters heard the same tone at the Hockey Night in Brampton charity event. Asked if he expects to return for a 14th season, Rielly said the wait was “not as hard as it seems,” that he feels lucky to have good people around him, and that “there are great things ahead.” The Morgan Rielly Maple Leafs story this week is not a trade. Mike Zeisberger's NHL.com dispatch, dated August 20, put Rielly at CAA Centre for the fifth Hockey Night in Brampton, a charity game supporting a second hospital in the city 20 miles northwest of Toronto. Rielly is 32. He has spent his entire 13-season career with the Maple Leafs since Toronto took him fifth overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. NHL.com said he is second on the franchise's all-time scoring list for defensemen with 549 points, behind only Hall of Famer Börje Salming (768), and is 49 games shy of 1,000 in the NHL.

He did not pretend last season was a banner year. His 36 points (11 goals, 25 assists) in 78 games were his fewest since 2020-21, when he played only 55 games. Toronto finished last in the Atlantic Division. Rielly said a down year makes you “welcome change” and that the group is “excited and driven and motivated to bounce back.” He also said playing in Toronto's fishbowl for more than a decade taught him how to tune out the noise.

The noise had a name. NHL.com and TSN both noted TSN's Darren Dreger reported in June that Rielly's agent, J.P. Barry, had submitted a list of four Western Conference teams his client would be willing to be moved to. Rielly did not comment on that report. He did tell NHL.com the offseason has not felt as hard as it looks from the outside. No trade came. The Morgan Rielly Maple Leafs file is still a Toronto file.

New general manager John Chayka is remodeling the roster. NHL.com listed two-time Stanley Cup champion goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, Gavin McKenna, the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and defenseman Darren Raddysh, who has already played golf with Rielly. Jim Hiller was named the 41st coach in Maple Leafs history on June 17. He was an assistant under Mike Babcock in Toronto from 2015 to 2019 and ran the power play Rielly played on.

What it means for the Maple Leafs

Rielly said he has had extensive conversations with Hiller and Chayka. He called Hiller “great” in a new role and said there is “a lot of trust” from the players who were there the first time. On Chayka: “He's got a plan and he's very direct. And I mean, as a player, that's what you want.” He expected McKenna “to be at camp and flying around and ready to go.”

That is not a farewell tour. It is a 32-year-old, 49 games from 1,000, standing in Brampton and saying the Morgan Rielly Maple Leafs era has another season in it. Until a trade actually happens, take the player at his word. The Western list can sit in a drawer.
