Karolina Muchova and Jakub Mensik won the US Open mixed doubles title on Wednesday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, beating Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 1-6, [10-6] and taking the $1 million prize. Sky Sports and Al Jazeera both confirmed the score. Mensik closed it with a 131-mph ace, then jumped. It is the first Grand Slam trophy for the Czech pairing.

The all-Czech team had already survived a mess in the semifinals. They trailed Mirra Andreeva and Andrey Rublev 3-0 and 8-5, then saved two match points and won 5-4 (8-6), 3-5, [11-9]. The final was cleaner once the match tiebreak started. Mensik's serve and net play opened an 8-4 lead. Muchova's best serve of the night brought up championship points.

What was the US Open mixed doubles final score?

Muchova and Mensik took the first set in under 30 minutes. Mensik aced Bencic on set point. Bencic broke for 3-1 in the second and later leveled the match when a forehand clipped the net cord and skipped past Muchova. The decider was a 10-point match tiebreak, the format for the 16-team event in its second year. Mensik put away a volley at 8-4 and finished with the ace.

They beat Kristina Mladenovic and Marcelo Arevalo in the first round and Emma Navarro and Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals. Bencic and Cobolli had knocked out Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz in the quarters, then ended the run of Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils in the other semi. The Swiss-Italian pair dropped a set for the first time in the tournament before the Czechs took the title.

How did Muchova and Mensik win the mixed title?

They came to have fun, then left with a check. "I wasn't really expecting to be standing here tonight," Muchova said. "We came out just to have fun and enjoy these mixed doubles and now we are standing here. So we did something right." She also joked that the matching pink-top, maroon-bottom outfits made the difference. Mensik is 20. Muchova lost a three-set Wimbledon final to Linda Noskova last month. This was a reset, not a consolation prize.

The revamped mixed draw is built for searches fans actually type: US Open mixed doubles, Muchova Mensik, Bencic Cobolli. Sets outside the final went to four games, no-ad scoring, and a 10-point tiebreak for a third set. Star pairings (Djokovic with Sabalenka, Alcaraz with Williams) filled the week before singles. The Czechs beat the format and the names.

Singles qualifying finishes Thursday. The main-draw ceremony is set for noon ET. For one night, the story at Flushing Meadows was two Czechs who treated mixed doubles like a bonus and left as champions.
