Nick Sirianni Sticks With Tanner McKee, Sean Mannion
Six straight losses, and Nick Sirianni is not blinking. The Eagles coach said Monday he is keeping Tanner McKee at quarterback and Sean Mannion calling the plays, even after Sunday night's 27-10 loss in Washington dropped Philadelphia to 2-6.
"I'm not making any changes there," Sirianni said, ESPN reported. "It is on all of us to figure out how to get things going in the right direction. Obviously, right now they're not."
Why Sirianni Is Holding the Line
Mannion is in his first year running the offense, and it has been rough. The Eagles are scoring 17.1 points per game, 30th in the NFL. He was brought in to install a system closer to the Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVay mold, but the plan never got a real foundation under it.
Look at what this offense has lost. Lane Johnson retired suddenly. Center Cam Jurgens was traded. Multiple skill players have been hurt. And Jalen Hurts is out after blood clots were found in his lungs. That is a lot to pin on a playcaller with two years of coaching experience, and Sirianni put the weight on himself too.
"Again, that brunt falls on myself, that falls on Sean, and we're going to do everything we can to get ourselves out of this," he said.
Tanner McKee Keeps the Job
McKee has started the last three games. Here is where he stands:
63.2% completions
639 passing yards
2 touchdowns, 2 interceptions
He threw for 212 yards and a pick against the Commanders on Sunday night. Joe Milton, a former Patriots sixth-round pick who was most recently in Dallas, is the primary backup.
"Tanner's our guy. We're not making any changes there," Sirianni said. "Everything's on the table for us in that aspect," he added, pointing to scheme, practice plays and how the week is scheduled as places to find answers.
Giants Come to Philly Next
No easy reset here. The Eagles host the division-leading Giants on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field (10 a.m. PT, Fox), then hit their bye. Win that one and the bye feels like a chance to rebuild. Lose it and the streak hits seven with two weeks to stew on it.
For Smacktok players, a quarterback averaging about 213 yards a start in an offense this banged up is a lean lower on McKee's passing yards until the unit shows something different.
Sirianni is betting on the guys in the room. Sunday against New York tells us if that bet still has legs.
