Nicolas Batum Retires After 18 NBA Seasons

Versatile forward Nicolas Batum is retiring at 37 after an 18-year NBA career and a long run as a pillar of the French national team, announcing the decision in a social media video with his son Ayden. The Associated Press and NBA.com carried the news through a Tuesday early update after Monday's video. Batum told his 10-year-old he wants to come home, take care of family, and make room for others after doing everything he needed to do on the floor.

Selected in the first round out of France and traded to Portland, Batum spent seven seasons with the Trail Blazers, then six with Charlotte, before late-career stops with the Los Angeles Clippers and a short stint in Philadelphia. He averaged 9.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists across 1,205 regular-season games while shooting 37 percent from three. The Swiss Army knife wing never needed a nightly scoring title to matter on winning teams.

For France he collected EuroBasket gold in 2013, Olympic silver medals in Tokyo and Paris, and World Cup bronze medals. The tribute video landed on the anniversary of his father's death on a court in 1991, when Batum was two.
