Nnamdi Madubuike Injury: No Week 1 Answer

Nnamdi Madubuike injury questions are still open 20 days from kickoff. Ravens coach Jesse Minter said Monday he does not have a "definitive answer" on whether the defensive tackle will be ready for Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 13. Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic posted the quote. The Capital Gazette and FOX Baltimore both carried it. ESPN's injury report listed Madubuike as questionable with that same Minter line. He is off the physically unable to perform list after last season's neck injury. He still has not done team work.

FOX Baltimore added the one new snap from Monday's practice. Madubuike hit the sled and lined up against other defensive linemen, a first this camp, but he did not join 11-on-11. Minter said the staff is focused on day-to-day improvement "and that's happening," Zrebiec wrote. He also said he thinks Madubuike can "help" Baltimore this season. That is not a Week 1 yes. It is not a season-ending no.

Nnamdi Madubuike injury: neck, PUP, now the sled

The neck injury ended last year as a career-threatening scare. Baltimore took him off PUP when camp opened enough for individual work. Team drills have waited. IR before Week 1 would cost him the first four games. ClutchPoints, citing Zrebiec, floated that as a roster option if the club needs the 53-man spot. Four games is a long stay for a player Minter still expects to help. It is also the only way to park a veteran who cannot practice in cut week.

The Ravens open Sept. 13. Cutdown is Sunday, Aug. 30, at 6 p.m. ET. A defensive tackle who has not taken a team rep in August is a problem for a staff that already lost center Danny Pinter for the year, Hensley of ESPN reported Monday. Zay Flowers also sat Monday after a new contract, ClutchPoints noted. The defense still needs the interior. Madubuike was that interior when he was healthy.

Week 1 vs the Colts, or later

Minter's phrasing left no cover. "I do not know if I have a definitive answer for that," the Capital Gazette quoted. FOX Baltimore had a shorter version: "I don't know the answer to that right now." Both are the same answer. The sled and the individual look were progress. They are not a practice. Until he takes a team period, the Colts game is a hope, not a plan.

Baltimore is trying to bounce back from an injury-riddled year that missed the playoffs. Madubuike is one of the names that has to come back for that to look like the old Ravens. Ashton Jeanty's sprained ankle is a different building and a different timeline. This one started last season and is still on a sled. Bud Clark's broken ankle is months. Madubuike's is a Week 1 watch with no date on the board.
