Rome Odunze says he plans to play in the Chicago Bears' Week 1 opener at Carolina despite a calf strain that left him officially questionable on the final injury report. Kickoff is 1 p.m. ET in Charlotte. Odunze told reporters he is "feeling ready to go" after limited practices Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Coach Ben Johnson called him hopeful and said Odunze looked good, while noting it is a long season. That is the classic Week 1 mix: player confidence, coach caution, and a questionable tag that fantasy managers have to live with until inactives post.

Calf strain, limited week, play plan

The calf issue hit in a Sep. 3 practice. Odunze never went full this week, but he stayed on the field in a limited role all three days. Bears.com listed him among four questionable players for Sunday. That is not a blank report, but it is also not an out.

If Odunze sits, Luther Burden III is the next name who gets a usage bump. Chicago's passing game still wants Odunze's size on the boundary when healthy. Fantasy rooms that drafted him as a WR2/3 need the inactive list before they lock a lineup.

Panthers road opener

Odunze finished 2025 with 44 catches for 661 yards and 6 touchdowns in 12 games before a foot stress fracture ended his year. Sunday is the first chance to reset that arc under Johnson. Carolina at home in Week 1 is a real test for a calf that has not practiced fully since early September.

Bears fans want the definitive quote and got it. Panthers fans want a limited Odunze. Friday only gave everyone a questionable tag plus Odunze saying he plans to play. Treat him as a lean-start with a bench contingency.

If he is active, start him with confidence that the calf held through a limited week. If he is inactive, pivot to Burden and keep Odunze stashed. Either way, the statement from the player is clearer than the injury report stamp.

Week 1 rarely hands you a clean WR decision. Odunze just made his side of it as clear as a calf tag allows. Check inactives, then ride the plan he already announced.
