Otega Oweh Out for Season After Achilles Surgery
By Smacktok
•

Otega Oweh's rookie season is over before the real games tip. The Oklahoma City Thunder announced that the guard underwent a successful procedure to address a ruptured right Achilles tendon and will miss the remainder of the 2026-27 season.
Dr. Martin O'Malley performed the surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York with Thunder medical staff present. Oweh suffered the injury in overtime of Oklahoma City's Oct. 13 preseason game against the Indiana Pacers and could not put weight on the right foot as he left the floor.
How the injury landed
The Thunder drafted Oweh 41st overall in June after two seasons at Kentucky, where the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 18.6 points and 4.8 rebounds as a senior and hit one of the loudest buzzer-beaters of the NCAA tournament. He appeared in four preseason games for Oklahoma City and averaged 6.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in 23.4 minutes per game.
He sits on a two-way slot alongside Josh Dix and Brooks Barnhizer. The club said further updates will come as appropriate. For now the only update that matters to Thunder fans is the long one: no 2026-27 minutes while the Achilles heals.
A painful Thunder draft pattern
Oklahoma City has now watched a recent draftee miss a full first season three years running. Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber each lost a year to ACL tears in 2024-25 and 2025-26. Achilles tears are a different animal, and the Thunder moved quickly to get Oweh under O'Malley's knife within a day of the rupture.
Preseason box scores will not show what Oweh might have been as a call-up spark off that two-way deal. The hope in Oklahoma City is that the surgical timeline gives him a clean runway to the 2027-28 camp instead of a rushed return that risks a second setback.
Oklahoma City opens the regular season without that second-round flier available for emergency minutes. The depth chart will lean on the veterans and the other two-way pieces while Oweh begins the long Achilles rehab that every NBA front office now treats with extreme caution. A ruptured Achilles ends seasons. It does not have to end careers when the surgery is clean and the timeline is respected.
Thunder fans drafted him for the bounce and the fearlessness. The bounce has to wait a year. When he comes back, the story starts with the night he went down in OT and the morning HSS put him back together.
