Celtics Sign Pritchard to 2-Year $44.2M Extension

Payton Pritchard is sticking around in green a little longer. The Boston Celtics signed the veteran guard to a two-year, $44.2 million contract extension that includes a mutual option for the 2029-30 season, per NBA.com News Services on Tuesday.
Pritchard is currently on a four-year deal through 2028. The new extension takes him through 2029-30 on paper, with that mutual option giving both sides a chance to renegotiate the final year or go their separate ways if the fit changes.
The numbers that earned it
Last season Pritchard posted career highs across the board: 17.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 32.3 minutes per game in 2025-26. That jump from role spark to every-night creator is exactly why Boston wanted him locked in before the market forced a harder conversation.
He won 2025 Kia Sixth Man of the Year after climbing from 9.3 points per game in the 2023-24 title year to 14.3 in 2024-25. The Celtics drafted him 26th overall in 2020 out of Oregon, and he has spent six seasons turning that mid-first into one of the quieter wins on the board.
Deep range was always the pitch. The part that changed is the trust. Thirty-two minutes a night means Brad Stevens and the coaching staff keep finding him when the offense stalls, not only when the lead is safe.
More than a bench spark now
Pritchard was a real piece of the 2024 championship run. The pull-up threes and pace were the highlight-reel half. The other half is the calm. Boston fans have watched him grow from junk-time heater to the guard who settles a possession, finds the extra pass and still has the nerve to fire from the logo.
Paying him like that matters in a cap world that punishes loyalty and rewards the next shiny wing. The Celtics just chose continuity with a homegrown guard who already knows every corner of the TD Garden floor.
What comes next
The mutual option for 2029-30 is the fine print worth remembering. It is not a forever blank check. It is a two-year bet that Pritchard stays this version of himself, with an exit ramp if either side wants a reset when the decade turns.
For Celtics fans, the headline is simpler. The Oregon kid who kept earning bigger nights just got paid like one of the pillars, and Boston will keep riding those pull-up threes deep into the decade.
