Rafael Jodar is into his first Masters 1000 final. The 20-year-old Spaniard beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 on Stadium Court at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Saturday, and in doing it he became the youngest finalist in the tournament's history, per the ATP Tour.

Medvedev is the World No. 6 and the 2019 Shanghai champion, and he was chasing his first Masters 1000 crown since Rome in 2023. Jodar needed one hour and 44 minutes to send him home. It was his second Top-10 win.

How Jodar took Medvedev apart

The first set was a grind of close games and break points on both sides. Jodar won the moments that mattered, then kept pulling the former World No. 1 from corner to corner. He finished with 22 winners to Medvedev's 14. When he gave back a break in the second set, he steadied and reeled off three of the final four games.

"It was a very tough match," Jodar said in his on-court interview. "In the first set all the games were very close, break points for him and break points for me. I am super happy with how I handled the important moments in the first set and how I served and returned."

That clean two-setter was a change of pace. Jodar had rallied from a set down in each of his first four matches in Shanghai just to reach the semis.

The numbers behind the breakout

The history piles up fast. The ATP says Jodar is the first man born in 2006 or later to reach a Masters 1000 final. He is also the second-youngest man to record 20 Masters 1000 wins in a season, behind only Rafael Nadal, who won 28 at age 19 in 2005.

This is a player who started 2026 outside the Top 100. He lifted his first tour-level trophy in Marrakech earlier this year and lost the championship match at the ATP 500 event in Washington in August. Sunday is his third tour-level final.

All-Spanish final and a Turin chase

Standing across the net will be Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the 25th seed, who knocked out top seed Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semifinal. It will be just the ninth all-Spanish Masters 1000 title match in series history, and Davidovich Fokina's first Masters 1000 final since 2022, per BBC Sport.

The stakes go beyond the trophy. Jodar sits ninth in the Live Race to Turin, which is effectively the final qualifying spot for the Nitto ATP Finals with Jannik Sinner out for the rest of 2026 with a knee injury. He is 279 points clear of 10th-placed Alex de Minaur. Win the title, and he can climb to sixth in the Race and crack the Top 10 of the ATP Rankings for the first time.

A kid who began the season outside the Top 100 is one match from a Masters title and a Top 10 debut. Sunday in Shanghai cannot get here fast enough.
