The Tampa Bay Rays beat the San Diego Padres 5-4 in 11 innings on Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, and completed a three-game sweep. The Associated Press recap, carried by ESPN and Bay News 9, had Jonny DeLuca hitting a two-out, two-run homer off Mason Miller in the ninth to tie the game 3-3. Jorge Mateo singled in the winning run in the 11th. The AP wire posted at 7:32 p.m. ET (4:32 p.m. PT).

DeLuca's ninth-inning swing was the game. ESPN's story said Samad Taylor appeared to catch the ball, but it came out at the wall and went over. Miller, San Diego's closer, had a two-run lead with two outs. One pitch later it was tied. Yardbarker and Field Level Media added that Junior Caminero had homered earlier and that Robbie Ray worked six innings with one run before the Padres' bullpen opened the door.

How did the Rays walk off the Padres?

Extra innings, then a gift. ESPN's play log had San Diego taking a 4-3 lead in the 11th on a Ty France sacrifice fly that scored Manny Machado. Tampa Bay answered in the bottom half. DeLuca reached on an error by Xander Bogaerts to tie it. Mateo then singled for the walk-off. That is a 5-4 final, 11 innings, sweep.

Ray's six innings kept San Diego in front long enough to hand Miller a save chance. The closer did not finish it. DeLuca did. Search Rays vs Padres score or DeLuca homer and the box is 5-4, Tampa Bay, three games to none in the series.

What does the sweep mean for the Rays?

It is their MLB-leading 14th series sweep, Yardbarker and Field Level wrote. That is a volume stat that travels in August. A Sunday walk-off after a ninth-inning homer off a high-leverage arm is the clip that will run overnight. Caminero's homer set the early tone. Mateo's single ended it. DeLuca's drive off Miller is the search query.

The other Sunday MLB board already had Max Scherzer punching out 10 in a Blue Jays shutout. This one is the late extra-inning result. Tampa Bay took all three from San Diego. Miller took the blown save. Bogaerts took the error. Mateo took the walk-off.
