Palacios Walk-Off Denies Red Sox Clincher

Richie Palacios punched a two-out walk-off single into shallow right in the ninth inning Saturday, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 2-1 at Tropicana Field to delay Boston's playoff clinch at least one more day. Palacios looped a 1-2 sinker from Garrett Whitlock (7-2) that scored Junior Caminero. It was Tampa Bay's third walk-off win of the nine-game homestand.

Bello's gem wasted

Bello threw a season-best eight innings, allowing one run on five hits with a career high-tying 11 strikeouts. Roman Anthony's two-out RBI double in the third had given Boston the early lead. Jonathan Aranda answered in the fourth with his 22nd homer, a opposite-field shot that tied it 1-1. That is all the Rays needed until Palacios ended it.

Bryan Baker (4-2) earned the win. Fantasy rooms streaming Whitlock as a ratio play can stamp the blown save and move on. Do not invent a collapse narrative for Boston from one delayed clincher. The Red Sox still control their October math. They just did not wrap it Saturday.

Caleb Durbin doubled twice and scored. Jarren Duran tripled in the ninth before Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded out to end a Red Sox threat. Tropicana stayed loud for the walk-off that flipped the clinch watch into another day of stress for Boston fans.

Palacios has been the Rays' late-inning pest for stretches of this homestand, and Saturday's loop single fit the pattern. Whitlock had already navigated traffic when the soft contact found grass. Boston's clinch math remains friendly, but Tropicana just reminded everyone that September still takes receipts. One more win or the right help and the Red Sox pop bottles. Saturday was not that night.

The Rays improved to 7-1 on the homestand and kept the AL East gap at five over New York. Palacios' soft single will not show up in a highlight package the way a walk-off homer does, but it counted the same. Boston goes back to work. Tampa Bay keeps dealing walk-offs.
