Dowdle in Boot, DNP at Steelers Practice

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rico Dowdle did not practice Wednesday and was spotted wearing a boot on his left foot as he works through a toe injury suffered in Sunday's loss to the Patriots, per Penn Live's Nick Farabaugh via NBC Sports, after earlier reports framed him as day-to-day following Tuesday testing. Neither the boot nor the DNP is a soft look for Week 3 availability against the Cincinnati Bengals at home Sunday.

Dowdle was carted to the locker room in the second half of that 20-3 loss. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported Tuesday that testing pointed day-to-day rather than a long stay. Wednesday's practice board just put a harder stamp on the short-term worry. Soft fantasy note only: if Dowdle sits, Jaylen Warren is the clear three-down candidate out of that backfield, and rookie Eli Heidenreich has mostly been special teams so far.

Steelers fans already watched the Patriots game go sideways. A healthy Dowdle was supposed to keep the run game honest into a Bengals week. A boot on Wednesday does not kill Sunday by itself, but it does mean Friday's practice and the final injury report are the next real checkpoints, not optimistic quotes.

Pittsburgh needs the ground game to show up against Cincinnati. Warren can handle volume. The question is whether Dowdle can clear the boot board in time to share it, or whether Week 3 becomes a Warren feature card by default.

Toe injuries can look minor on Tuesday and stubborn by Friday. The boot is the tell that the medical staff wants him off it midweek. That does not mean Dowdle is ruled out. It does mean any fantasy manager treating him as a locked starter for Sunday is guessing ahead of the practice report.

Steelers fans should watch how many individual periods Dowdle gets Friday and whether the boot is gone. Until then, the safe read is Warren as the volume hedge and Dowdle as a game-time question, not a locked three-down piece.
