Sam Darnold Has Unique Soft-Tissue Injury

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold is dealing with what the club calls a "very unique soft-tissue" injury in the glute area, with the hip joint unaffected and the outlook framed as short-term even though there is still no firm return timeline. A team spokesperson shared the update Monday with local reporters, five days after Darnold left the season opener on the first drive.
Darnold went down on a sack when his right knee hit the turf hard against the New England Patriots. He was evaluated, taken to Harborview Medical Center during the game, and stayed overnight. Early language called it a hip injury. General manager John Schneider later said Darnold avoided a fractured hip. Monday's statement reframed it as a glute soft-tissue issue that did not damage the joint.
Week 2 at Arizona looks like Drew Lock
Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Darnold is expected to miss Sunday's road game at the Arizona Cardinals (4:25 p.m. ET, Sept. 20). He has not been placed on injured reserve. Drew Lock, who finished the 13-10 comeback win over New England, is lined up for his first start since 2024.
Coach Mike Macdonald had already called the early imaging "really, really good news" on his radio show, saying the hip was intact and the problem looked muscular. The Monday club statement kept that short-term tone without promising a snap count.
Fantasy managers and Seahawks fans should treat Lock as the Week 2 starter until practice reports say otherwise. Seattle does not want a long IR stint if the soft tissue calms down in days, not months.
What to watch midweek
Wednesday and Thursday practice participation will be the next real tells. If Darnold is limited or out, Lock keeps the job for the Cardinals trip. If Darnold progresses, the decision can slide toward Friday. Either way the sourced picture is clear: unique soft-tissue glute injury, hip joint OK, short-term language, no firm date, and Week 2 availability leaning no.
Keep the panic meter lower than a structural hip injury. Keep Lock warmed up. And keep checking the injury report before you lock a Seattle QB in your lineup.
Unique does not mean forever. It does mean patience until the Seahawks put a date on the board.
