Taylor Fritz is into the third round of the Shanghai Masters. The 11th seed beat Matteo Arnaldi 7-5, 6-4 on Saturday in a match that finished under the roof on Grandstand 2 after rain rolled in, per the tournament and Tennis Watcher.

This one matters for more than a round. Fritz sits 12th in the Live Race to Turin, and every win in Shanghai is a step toward a spot at the ATP Finals. He is ranked No. 12 and fighting to get back into the top 10. After a first-round bye, this was his first match of the week, and he got the job done in exactly two hours.

The first serve did the heavy lifting

Arnaldi actually landed a slightly higher share of first serves, 63 percent to 61. The difference was what happened next. Fritz won 80 percent of his first-serve points to Arnaldi's 68, and 28 percent of his serves came back unreturned.

The first set stayed on serve until 5-5, when three Arnaldi unforced errors handed Fritz the break, per Tennis World Italia. He served it out.

Then the rain came. Play stopped in the second set while the roof closed, and Arnaldi got treatment on his right shoulder during the delay. He did win back a break after the restart, but Fritz broke again to love in the seventh game, saved three break points in the next one and closed it out 6-4. Fritz finished 3-for-7 on break chances. Arnaldi went 1-for-5.

Closer than the score says

Give Arnaldi credit. He hit 23 winners to Fritz's 21 and won 9 of 11 points at the net, while Fritz won only five of his 13 trips forward. Where Fritz pulled away was from the baseline, winning 52 points there to Arnaldi's 39 and making fewer unforced errors, 23 to 27.

Total points ended 79-67. Steady pressure, not a blowout. The win gives Fritz a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head.

Who is next in Shanghai

Fritz will face the winner of Luciano Darderi and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round.

The Turin race is getting crowded around him. Arthur Fils, seventh in the Live Race, beat Pavel Kotov 6-3, 6-4. Daniil Medvedev, eighth, came back to beat Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Felix Auger-Aliassime, 14th, survived Camilo Ugo Carabelli in three.

Fritz has been to the Shanghai semis before. If that first serve keeps cooking like this, a deep run here could punch his ticket to Turin.
