Taylor Fritz Beats Fils to Reach Basel Semis
Taylor Fritz is into the Basel semis after Arthur Fils retired from their Swiss Indoors quarterfinal on Friday, with Fritz leading 6-2, 2-0. Fils took a medical timeout late in the first set for a lower back problem, came back out, dropped serve to open the second set and then walked to the net to shake hands after 45 minutes.
Nobody wants to win like that, but Fritz will happily take the free pass. The American turned 29 on Wednesday, and this run keeps a late push for the Nitto ATP Finals alive. The ATP has him 12th in the Live Race to Turin, with a path to 10th if he lifts the trophy in Basel.
How It Went Sideways for Fils
Fils actually started fast, breaking Fritz in the very first game. Then the whole match flipped. Fritz reeled off eight straight games while Fils grew more and more limited, cutting rallies short and reaching for his lower back before he finally called for the physio and left the court for treatment.
He tried to keep going, lost his serve to start the second set and decided that was enough. With the Rolex Paris Masters starting Monday, it looked like a call made with the home crowd in mind. Fils, a titlist in Barcelona and Cincinnati this year, still sits seventh in the race for Turin and 316 points clear of the last qualifying spot. How fast that back calms down will decide how his season ends.
The Numbers That Matter
16-3 at ATP 500 events this season
4 semifinals in 5 ATP 500 events this year, after Dallas, Halle and Washington
40 wins in 2026, the fifth straight year he has hit that mark
It is also his first semifinal in Basel, and it squares his head-to-head with Fils at 1-1. Earlier in the week he beat Rinky Hijikata 6-4, 7-6(3) on his birthday and Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-3, which is a nice bounce back after he lost the Lyon final to Lorenzo Musetti.
Vacherot Is Up Next
Saturday's semifinal is against Valentin Vacherot of Monaco, who outlasted Holger Rune 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 on Friday a day after knocking out third seed Rafael Jodar. Vacherot saved nine of the 10 break points he faced against Rune and is into his fourth tour-level semifinal, so he is not going to roll over.
The other semi has Jiri Lehecka against Jan-Lennard Struff, the German who stunned Novak Djokovic earlier this week. Fritz, the No. 6 seed, is now the highest seed left in the draw, and his 45-minute day was the shortest of the quarterfinals.
My Smacktok lean for Saturday: Fritz to beat Vacherot. He got a short day Friday, he has made the semis in four of his five ATP 500 events this year, and he is 16-3 at that level.
A title in Basel would put Fritz right back in the Turin conversation, and right now he has the cleanest path in the draw to get it.
