Tiafoe Beats Medvedev to Reach US Open QF

Frances Tiafoe finally cracked Daniil Medvedev on the court that loves him most. The No. 11 seed beat the No. 7 seed 7-6(1), 6-4, 7-6(6) on Sunday at Louis Armstrong Stadium and reached a fourth US Open quarterfinal in five years, per Tennis Majors and The Banner.

The crowd chanted "Let's go, Foe!" while Tiafoe turned a 1-6 career hole against Medvedev into a straight-sets statement. He is now 10-0 on Armstrong, the people's court that keeps giving him fuel. Medvedev, the 2021 champion here, could not get past the Round of 16 at any Slam in 2026. That is the story of his year in majors. That is also why Sunday night felt different the second the first breaker flipped.

Tiebreaks, then the middle set

Tiafoe took the first-set breaker 7-1 and closed the third 8-6. The only set decided without a tiebreak went his way too. That is how little separated them on paper and how cleanly Big Foe finished the nights that used to lean Medvedev's way. The Russian still made him hit one more ball. Tiafoe just kept answering with first-strike forehands and a serve that held when the stadium got loudest.

It was Tiafoe's fifth straight win over a top-10 opponent and the 17th of his career against that group. He is also 9-1 in his last ten matches. The H2H said Medvedev owned him. Sunday night said that streak is over. Flushing already knew the version of Tiafoe who lives inside Armstrong. Now the draw has to deal with it in a quarterfinal that suddenly looks winnable for the American side.

"I'm loving it. Loving the energy, for sure," Tiafoe said after, per The Banner. Celebrities and athletes packed the stands, and the Hyattsville native kept feeding off every roar between points. That is not a soft vibes win. That is a three-set account settlement with a former champion who used to own this matchup.

Michelsen next, all-American QF

Waiting in the quarters is unseeded American Alex Michelsen, who beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry 7-6(6), 6-4, 6-4 without dropping a set all tournament. Two Americans, one semifinal berth. Tiafoe has been here before, including US Open semis in 2022 and 2024. Michelsen has never reached a Slam quarterfinal until this fortnight, and he has done it without handing anyone a set to study.

Earlier Sunday, Carlos Alcaraz swept Tommy Paul into the other half of the men's draw. New York still gets an all-U.S. quarterfinal on Tiafoe's side. Armstrong already delivered the statement. Tuesday decides who keeps walking toward the last four.
