Tommy Fleetwood Defends Tour Championship

Tommy Fleetwood defends the Tour Championship this week at East Lake Golf Club, and he is trying to do something nobody has done. Golfmagic and the PGA TOUR First Look both framed it as the first back-to-back FedExCup. He sits ninth in the standings after the BMW Championship. The finale is Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 27-30, in Atlanta. The purse is $40 million, the PGA TOUR overview and Golfweek both posted. All 30 players start at even par for a second straight year. There is no starting-stroke head start for Scottie Scheffler at No. 1.

Tour Championship 2026: 30 names, $40 million

Scheffler is still FedExCup No. 1. Matt Fitzpatrick is second. Wyndham Clark won BMW and arrives third. Cameron Young, Si Woo Kim, Chris Gotterup, Collin Morikawa, and Sam Burns fill four through eight, Golfmagic's table listed. Fleetwood is ninth. Aberg is 10th. Rory McIlroy is 11th, chasing a record fourth FedExCup, the First Look wrote. Xander Schauffele is 12th. They go off together at 12:54 p.m. Thursday. Scheffler and Fitzpatrick close the wave at 2 p.m.

Three players jumped the BMW cut line. Cantlay started 43rd and finished second, birdieing his last three holes, to land 19th. Gary Woodland went from 31st to 18th (T-4) and is back at East Lake for the first time since 2019. Robert MacIntyre closed with a 65, T-7, and climbed from 36th to 25th a week after a knee cyst took him out of St. Jude. Kurt Kitayama, Rickie Fowler, and Bud Cauley fell out, the First Look said. Open champion Ryan Fox held the last spot at No. 30.

Even par for everyone, including Scheffler

The format is 72-hole stroke play. No starting strokes. That is year two of the change. Golfweek said the winner is the FedExCup champion and that the $40 million purse is the largest of the season. Six players are Tour Championship debutants: Kristoffer Reitan, Alex Fitzpatrick, Ryan Gerard, Min Woo Lee, Alex Smalley, and Ryan Fox. Two of those are rookies (Reitan and Alex Fitzpatrick). Scheffler, Morikawa, and Viktor Hovland are on a seventh straight East Lake. McIlroy is on a ninth.

Scheffler played BMW with HFMD and said he wanted rest. He is still the No. 1 in a field where first place pays the same as 30th on Thursday morning: even par. Fleetwood does not have to chase a number. He has to beat 29 other players on a course where he already has the trophy. East Lake, Aug. 27-30. First round tee times are posted. Golfweek called it an eight-figure payday on the largest purse of the season.
