Tommy Paul kept his Shanghai run rolling under the stadium lights. The American beat Zizou Bergs 7-6(5), 6-4 on Wednesday in the Rolex Shanghai Masters round of 16, booking a quarterfinal against Daniil Medvedev after grinding through a tight first set and finishing clean in the second.

Bergs arrived with real momentum after upsetting Carlos Alcaraz earlier in the draw. Paul still found a way. He saved pressure in the opener, closed the breaker, and never let the Belgian seize the second set on Stadium Court.

How Paul closed it

The first set turned into a serve battle. Bergs earned five break points in the 11th game, and Paul refused to panic. "I just kept telling myself that if I got broken, I was going to break back. You have to believe in yourself, especially in those situations," Paul said afterward.

He took the tiebreak 7-5, then stayed steady while Bergs needed an injury timeout early in the second. Paul still had to finish the job, breaking enough to bank the 6-4 and move into his third ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal of 2026. Per match stats, he won 68 percent of first-serve points and saved eight of nine break points.

"I was surprised by his level. He showed a very high level," Paul said of Bergs. "He forced me to close it out, and that's exactly what he had to do in that position."

Medvedev is next

Medvedev had already punched through earlier Wednesday, beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-5 to reach the last eight as the only former Shanghai champion left. Their head-to-head leans hard Medvedev's way (4-1 overall, 3-0 on hard), and Paul knows free points will be rare.

"With Medvedev, we've had good and bad matches," Paul said. "He's a player you have to come into the match with a game plan against, and it has to be a very good plan, because he's not going to miss many balls and he's going to force you to win every point." He added that he needs "the mindset to last all day" and to execute that plan with coach Brad locked in on tactics.

Stay in Shanghai

Paul already ended Valentin Vacherot's title defense earlier in the week. Now the draw gives him a quarterfinal against the Shanghai favorite in the bottom half. For fans who want a U.S. story in October, this is the one still alive: hold serve, pick your spots, and see if a clean plan can finally crack Medvedev on a hard court he loves.
