Tua Trending as Penix QB2 for TNF

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is "trending in the right direction" to serve as Michael Penix Jr.'s backup Thursday night at Lambeau Field, coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters Wednesday, after Tagovailoa returned as a full participant on Tuesday's injury report following an oblique injury that kept him inactive for Weeks 1 and 2. Penix is locked in as the starter for his first game since tearing his ACL last season. Wednesday's final injury report still stamps the game designations.
That Wednesday checkpoint is the board that matters. Tagovailoa was listed as the Week 1 starter before the oblique hit in the Thursday practice before the opener. He missed Week 2 entirely, then came back full on Tuesday. Stefanski would not hand out a final stamp, but the language moved from rehab talk to backup talk in one sentence.
Soft fantasy note only: do not invent a late Penix scratch from a trending-QB2 quote. Treat Tua as depth insurance for a Thursday night road game, and wait for the final report before you move any Falcons QB piece in a DFS or season lineup.
Atlanta already lived the rush with Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand in a 34-3 loss to Carolina. Fans want Penix healthy and a real No. 2 behind him if the first drive goes sideways at Lambeau. Tagovailoa signed a one-year veteran-minimum deal after Miami released him in March. Stefanski called him an "awesome teammate" who has been ultra supportive while working back.
The Falcons need a clean pocket and a clean plan if Penix's first series stalls. Having Tagovailoa available as QB2 changes the sideline math without changing the starter card. Rush and Strand already showed what a thin quarterback room looks like on a bad Sunday. This week is about stacking healthy arms, not rewriting the depth chart midweek.
Green Bay will bring the Lambeau noise either way. Atlanta's job is to get Penix through the week healthy and know who is next if something goes wrong. Wednesday's quote put Tagovailoa on that next-up board without promising a surprise start.
QB board
Penix: Week 3 starter at Packers. First start since ACL tear.
Tagovailoa: full Tuesday. Trending toward QB2 Thursday. Final report still pending.
Penix gets the start. Tagovailoa is fighting to get the headset. That is the only Wednesday story that matters for Atlanta's quarterback room heading into Green Bay.

Watch the final Week 3 designations. If Tua is up as the backup, Atlanta finally has a real Plan B under center at Lambeau.
