Falcons Name Tua Tagovailoa Week 1 Starter

Tua Tagovailoa is the Falcons' Week 1 starting quarterback against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team announced, with ESPN confirming coach Kevin Stefanski's plan: Michael Penix Jr. will be inactive, and Cooper Rush is the backup.

That ends a camp competition that lasted past roster cutdowns. Atlanta kept four quarterbacks on the initial 53, and Stefanski still says he has "blinders" on anything past Sunday. For now the call is clear. Tua takes the first snap in Pittsburgh.

Why Tua, why Penix sits

Tagovailoa signed a one-year, $1.3 million deal after Miami released him in March and ate a record dead-cap hit. He worked with the starters through most of camp, started the first and final preseason games, and finished the preseason 10-of-13 for 117 yards with a 103.7 rating and no touchdowns or interceptions.

Penix is still climbing back from the ACL tear that ended his 2025 season in November. He was not cleared for 11-on-11 until the final week of camp and did not play in the preseason. Penix told Stefanski he is "really close" but "not where I want to be right now." Inactive for Week 1 is the medical and competitive answer.

Rush went 30-of-48 for 254 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions in the preseason and won the No. 2 job for Sunday. Undrafted Jack Strand stays on the 53 as depth insurance after a productive August. General manager Ian Cunningham called the four-QB cutdown an insurance policy after both Tua and Penix had early-camp health limits.

Atlanta has started a different quarterback in Week 1 in each of the past six seasons. Tagovailoa, 28, makes his first start for a team that is not Miami after six years and 76 starts with the Dolphins. The prove-it year starts on the road against a Steelers defense that will test the new under-center looks Stefanski wants.

Skill toys and the Steelers test

Atlanta's skill room is built for quick distribution: Bijan Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitts, plus free-agent adds Jahan Dotson, Olamide Zaccheaus, and Brian Robinson Jr., with third-rounder Zachariah Branch in the mix. That is the offense Tua has always wanted when the pocket stays clean.

Week 1 in the NFL always reshapes quarterback rooms. Across the league, availability chatter already covers other openers, from Puka Nacua expected for the Rams to early sheets like Seattle's Ty Okada DNP note. Atlanta's choice is different: a veteran on a prove-it deal over a recovering first-rounder for one Sunday in Pittsburgh.
