Tyler Allgeier, Cardinals Stun Cowboys 33-30 in OT
Tyler Allgeier piled up 191 scrimmage yards, almost all of it after halftime, and Chad Ryland redeemed a missed extra point with a 42-yard field goal in overtime as the Arizona Cardinals stunned the Dallas Cowboys 33-30 on Sunday at AT&T Stadium. Dallas did not trail until that final kick and led by two touchdowns early in the fourth quarter.
It is the fifth straight Arizona win over Dallas, and the Cardinals are now 5-0 all time at AT&T Stadium, per the AP. Both teams sit at 3-5, but this one will sting in Dallas for a long time.
Allgeier Carried the Comeback
Allgeier finished with 11 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown, including a career-long 63-yard run, plus 44 receiving yards and a 5-yard touchdown catch set up by his own 50-yard run. He was the only Arizona running back left standing. Rookie Jeremiyah Love, the No. 3 overall pick, left with another ankle injury after missing the previous two games with an ankle issue, and Bam Knight was ruled out with a concussion.
The quarterback switch mattered too. Gardner Minshew replaced Jacoby Brissett in the third quarter and went 17 of 23 for 188 yards and three touchdowns.
The Ending Was Absurd
Down 30-24 with 1:05 to play, Minshew drove Arizona 80 yards in eight plays. He found Allgeier for 14, then Michael Wilson for 21 and 27, and Wilson got behind the defense for a 13-yard touchdown with 6 seconds left to tie it. Ryland, who had already made a 58-yarder, pushed the go-ahead extra point wide left.
Arizona became the third team since 2000 to miss a go-ahead PAT in the final 10 seconds of regulation, and the first of the three to win anyway. Both teams went three-and-out to open overtime. Then Wilson caught a 17-yarder, Allgeier ran for 11, and Ryland hit from 42. Wilson finished with eight catches for 111 yards.
For Dallas, the defense played its best game of the season for three quarters and then cracked. The Cowboys were outgained 467-261 and averaged 2.4 yards per carry. Dak Prescott threw a touchdown and ran for one, but that was not enough. Dallas also lost rookie safety Caleb Downs to a concussion and tight end Jake Ferguson to an ankle injury.
What Comes Next
The Cardinals play at Seattle next Sunday at 1:25 PM PT, and the Cowboys go to Indianapolis.
The key detail is Love's ankle. If he sits again, Allgeier is the guy, and he just showed what he can do with a full workload. My Smacktok lean for Seattle: higher on Allgeier's rushing yards if Love is out. Cardinals fans just got one of the wildest wins of the season, and the player who carried it might be the lead back for a while.
