Tyrese Maxey Scores 28 as 76ers Spoil Knicks Ring Night

Tyrese Maxey scored 28 points and the Philadelphia 76ers spoiled the New York Knicks' championship ring night with a 106-100 win on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, the first real look at a Sixers team that added LeBron James and Jaylen Brown this summer.
The Knicks raised their NBA championship banner and got their rings before tip. Jalen Brunson told the Garden crowd, "The joy that this city had this summer, we would love to replicate that again," per The Associated Press. Then Philadelphia came back from a halftime deficit and took the night.
Tyrese Maxey and the Sixers' third-quarter run
Maxey played 40 minutes, went 9 for 19 from the field and made 8 of 9 free throws, per the ESPN box score. Brown had 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in his first game since being acquired from Boston.
The Knicks led 58-54 at halftime after a first half full of fouls and missed shots. Philadelphia closed the third quarter on an 11-0 run, capped by Brown's second straight 3-pointer at the buzzer for an 83-76 lead. Maxey's three-point play early in the fourth pushed it to 87-78.
That buzzer 3 from Brown is the clip Sixers fans will be sending around all morning.
LeBron James starts season 24
James began his NBA-record 24th season with 14 points and nine rebounds in 34 minutes. He signed with Philadelphia after deciding to leave the Los Angeles Lakers. Joel Embiid added 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
The bench made the difference while New York focused on the big names. Anfernee Simons hit three 3-pointers and fellow newcomer Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hit two, per AP.
New York had one last push. Karl-Anthony Towns hit a 3 to cut it to 96-95, but Embiid answered with a 3 of his own and the Sixers stayed in front.
For Philly fans, the best sign is that the stars were not even the story and they still won in New York.
Brunson's cold night
Brunson, the NBA Finals MVP, scored 21 points but shot 6 for 19, wearing gold sneakers for the occasion. The Knicks shot 37% overall and 33.3% from 3. Towns had 19 points and 12 rebounds.
It flips the script from last spring, when New York swept Philadelphia in the second round during a 13-game winning streak on the way to its first title since 1973.
Knicks fans got the banner and the rings. They will want the shooting back by Friday.
What's next
The 76ers host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night. The Knicks visit the Boston Celtics on Friday night.
Maxey's 40 minutes and nine free-throw attempts are the usage to trust against Cleveland on Thursday, and Towns, with a double-double in only 24 minutes, is the Knick to keep in Friday lineups in Boston.
