Valentin Vacherot Beats Taylor Fritz to Reach Basel Final
Valentin Vacherot just took out Taylor Fritz in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, to reach the Basel final at the Swiss Indoors on Saturday.
For American fans, that one stings. Fritz was the No. 6 seed and the higher ranked player by a mile, sitting at No. 13 in the world while Vacherot is No. 31. And Fritz had beaten Vacherot in their only previous meeting, which came right here in the Basel first round last year. This time Vacherot flipped the script.
The First Set Tiebreak Decided It
This was a serving match from the start. Fritz fired 11 aces and Vacherot answered with 10, and the opening set went all the way to a tiebreak. Vacherot edged it 7-5, and you could feel the match swing right there. Fritz is at his most dangerous when he is ahead and serving with confidence, and losing that breaker took a lot of air out of him.
In the second set, Vacherot kept holding, kept the pressure on the Fritz serve and took it 6-3. The whole thing took 1 hour and 26 minutes, which tells you how little room there was for Fritz to work his way back in.
Why Vacherot Was the Better Server
The key numbers are on his side of the ledger. Vacherot held in 10 of his 11 service games and saved 2 of the 3 break points he faced. Fritz held 8 of 10 and got broken twice.
That is the whole story of indoor tennis. Hold, hold, hold, and pounce once. Vacherot did it better, and he did it against a guy who usually wins those serve battles.
A Big Run Keeps Rolling
This is not a one-off for the player from Monaco. He beat Holger Rune in the quarterfinals to get here, and now he has knocked out a top American too. He gets the winner of Jiri Lehecka and Jan-Lennard Struff in Sunday's final.
For Fritz, it is a frustrating exit after a week where he got through his quarterfinal when Arthur Fils retired. He did not play badly on serve. He just could not crack Vacherot's, and that is going to sting with the Paris Masters right around the corner.
My Smacktok lean: go higher on Vacherot's aces in the final. He hit 10 against a top 15 player, landed 74% of his first serves and won 78% of those points, so that serve is clicking.
