Will Johnson to IR; Season Likely Over

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Will Johnson was placed on injured reserve Wednesday with a neck injury suffered against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 20, and the club expects his season to be over, per azcardinals.com's Darren Urban, while promoting veteran corner Starling Thomas V from the practice squad. Johnson posted on Instagram that "this one hurts" after the injury and spoke as if he would not be back until next season.

That IR stamp is the board. Soft fantasy note only: if you stashed Johnson as a defensive streamer, move on. Thomas, who started 22 games across 2023 and 2024 before tearing his ACL in training camp last year, is the immediate roster replacement. Jay Toia signed to the practice squad in the corresponding move.

Cardinals fans already watched a secondary patchwork through early September. Garrett Williams is still rehabbing last season's Achilles and has yet to be active. Losing Johnson for the year turns that room into a prove-it stretch for Thomas and whoever else Arizona trusts on the outside.

Johnson's Instagram note thanked supporters and said he would "attack this to come back better for myself and Cardinals nation." That is the season-over language without the medical jargon. Arizona now has to find coverage answers without one of its young corners for the rest of 2026.

Neck injuries do not get negotiated in public. When a second-year corner writes like the year is done and the club stamps IR the same week, fans should believe the board. Thomas gets the chance he earned before last year's ACL. The Cardinals get thinner on the edge until someone else steps up.

Arizona's defense needed that young corner talent to hold up through a long stretch. Losing Johnson for the season is a real hit to the secondary plan, and every remaining opponent will test the next man up.
