William Contreras went 4 for 4 Friday night and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1, the Associated Press reported. Every hit was a single. The only run he drove in was the first one. That is the whole offensive report, and it was enough. Jacob Misiorowski threw six shutout innings at a sellout American Family Field, MLB.com said, and Milwaukee became the first team in the majors to 80 wins.

The AP put the third inning in order. Luis Lara and Jackson Chourio opened with consecutive singles, runners on the corners. Contreras punched one up the middle to score Lara. Andrew Vaughn's fielder's choice scored Chourio. That was 2-0, and that was the night. Sixteen of the 17 hits in the game were singles, MLB.com noted. Michael Harris II had the only extra-base hit, a sixth-inning double off Misiorowski.

William Contreras 4-for-4 behind a Cy Young duel

Misiorowski (13-5) struck out six, walked two, and allowed four hits in 96 pitches, the AP said. Thirty-two of those pitches were at least 100 mph. The top was 103.1. He lowered his ERA to 1.68 and his strikeout total to 216. He leads the majors in both. MLB.com added the rest of the Cy Young sheet: a 0.76 WHIP and a .152 average against. Chris Sale, the 2024 Cy Young winner, went six innings, eight hits, no walks, six strikeouts. Sale (12-9) has allowed three runs or fewer in an MLB-leading 20 consecutive starts, the AP reported.

It was not a pure heat night. MLB.com said 39.6 percent of Misiorowski's pitches were sliders or cutters, a season high, and his fastball averaged 100.1 mph, eighth-lowest of his 24 starts. "The offspeed felt great. I felt that was the only thing I had 'on' today," Misiorowski told MLB.com. Contreras, who caught the whole thing and went 4 for 4, told the same outlet the mix was the difference. "Being able to mix different pitches, yeah, it's a different look than he would have given you last year."

How the Brewers closed a 2-1 win over Atlanta

Lara went 2 for 3 and robbed Matt Olson with a leaping catch at the center-field wall in the sixth, the AP said. MLB.com quoted Misiorowski calling him "Air Lara." Atlanta loaded the bases in the eighth after Harris's two-out RBI single. Antonio Senzatela walked Ozzie Albies, then got Mauricio Dubon on a fly to right. In the ninth, Mike Yastrzemski singled, pinch runner Lane Thomas stole second, and Trevor Megill struck out Ronald Acuna Jr. for his 24th save in 26 chances.

Misiorowski has now struck out at least six in 20 consecutive starts, MLB.com reported. That is a Brewers record and the 18th such stretch in a single season since at least 1900. Zack Wheeler did it last year for the Phillies. Sale, on the other side, called the fastball "probably the most impressive" he has ever seen. Milwaukee is 80-49. Atlanta is 75-54. Martin Perez and Logan Henderson start Saturday, the AP said. This is the same Brewers club that just took the series from Seattle. Friday was the next test: first place against first place, and a catcher who did not make an out.
