Shelton vs Paul: Paris Masters QF Preview
By Smacktok
•

Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul set an all-American Paris Masters quarterfinal for Friday at Plenitude Arena after both survived home hopes on Thursday. Shelton edged Arthur Rinderknech 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5), and Paul beat Quentin Halys 7-6(3), 6-4 to keep his Turin chase alive.
It is their first head-to-head meeting since 2024, two friends chasing a first Paris semifinal, with very different seasons hanging over the net.
Shelton's Career-Best Win Total
The third-seeded Shelton won five of the last six points from 2-4 down in the deciding-set tiebreak against Rinderknech. It was his 43rd tour-level win of the season, a personal best after 42 wins in 2024, per the ATP Tour.
Shelton has already locked his Nitto ATP Finals spot in Turin. He is playing free, and he sounded fired up about facing a friend in form.
"It's been a long time since we've been on the court, but I'm looking forward to it," Shelton said. "He's in great form right now. A great player, a great friend. I've been rooting for him all year to make a push and make it to Turin. It will be fireworks tomorrow."
Paul Is Still Chasing Turin
Paul needed the Halys win. Defeat would have ended his Finals hopes, and he ground through another Frenchman in straight sets. He sits 13th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin and trails ninth-placed Rafael Jodar by 309 points, with Taylor Fritz also still alive in Paris while Jodar and Frances Tiafoe are already out.
That is the subplot hanging over Friday. Shelton is booked for Turin. Paul still has to climb, and a quarterfinal run in Paris is one of the few remaining levers.
First Meeting Since 2024
Both players are hunting a first Paris Masters semifinal. The indoor hard court has been quick all week, which fits Shelton's lefty serve and Paul's ability to hang in tiebreaks. Their history is friendly off the court and unfinished on it since 2024.
The other quarterfinal in the top half is Rinky Hijikata vs. Luca Van Assche after Hijikata rallied past Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Van Assche beat Lorenzo Musetti. Whoever comes out of Shelton-Paul gets a path that suddenly looks wide open.
Smacktok pick lean: Lean toward at least one tiebreak in Shelton vs. Paul. Both needed breakers to get through Thursday, and neither has owned the other lately on a fast indoor court.
Friends for a day, then rivals for a semifinal. Friday in Paris is the match both Americans circled when the draw came out.
