Cortes Acosta Faces Walker in UFC Vegas 124
By Smacktok

Johnny Walker stepped into a short-notice heavyweight main event, and now he meets Waldo Cortes Acosta on Saturday night at Meta APEX in Las Vegas for UFC Vegas 124. Cortes Acosta took the bout on about a week and a half's notice after other fighters declined, and Walker answered when the UFC needed a partner.
Prelims start at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT, with the main card at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on Paramount+. For a card that needed saving, this one suddenly looks like a first-round fireworks watch.
How the Main Event Came Together
Cortes Acosta told UFC.com he was in no matter who stood across from him. Two fighters turned the spot down before Walker, the former light heavyweight danger man, moved up and took it. Walker already made his heavyweight debut in October with a first-round knockout of Mick Parkin.
That is a fast climb into a main event against a guy who was knocking people cold earlier this year.
Cortes Acosta Wants a Reset
The Dominican contender rolled knockouts of Ante Delija, Shamil Gaziev, and Derrick Lewis before back-to-back decision losses to Alexander Volkov and Curtis Blaydes slowed him down. He told UFC.com he felt Volkov ran for points and Blaydes held him down for control, and he wants a cleaner, more decisive night this time.
His plan for Walker is simple: cut off the cage, push him onto his heels, and hunt the head. He even joked that Walker's recent work with Volkov might mean more running, not less.
"I need to cut off the ring, that's the first thing," Cortes Acosta said. "I need to push forward, like I'm pushing him onto his heels, and knock him out, hitting hard to the head."
Walker Brings Chaos Up a Weight
Walker has always been the kind of fighter who can end a night in one exchange. A first-round finish of Parkin in his heavyweight debut showed the power travels. Against Cortes Acosta, the danger cuts both ways. If Walker lands first, the short-notice main event ends early. If Cortes Acosta pins him on the fence, Walker's wildness becomes a target.
The co-main of Tatiana Suarez vs. Virna Jandiroba sits underneath, but the heavyweight spot is the reason people will stay up for the Apex on Saturday.
Smacktok pick lean: Lean toward a fight that does not see a third round. Walker's October R1 KO and Cortes Acosta's stated first-round knockout plan both point to early damage at Meta APEX.
Short notice usually means chaos. On Saturday in Las Vegas, that is the whole point of the main event.
