Chourio Go-Ahead Lifts Brewers Past Cubs 4-3

Jackson Chourio's go-ahead two-run single through a drawn-in infield sparked a three-run eighth, and his diving catch of Seiya Suzuki's fly ended it as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 on Monday at American Family Field, per the Associated Press. Milwaukee moved to 89-56. Chicago sits 81-64. The NL Central lead is eight.

Milwaukee trailed 2-1 entering the eighth. Garrett Mitchell walked and Joey Ortiz doubled on Matthew Boyd's 100th and final pitch. Chourio greeted Ryan Zeferjahn with a grounder that snuck into right and scored both runners for a 3-2 lead. Chourio stole second, Brice Turang walked, and after a William Contreras strikeout, Jacob Webb walked Jake Bauers before Christian Yelich's sacrifice fly made it 4-2.

Ninth-inning drama, Chourio's glove

Abner Uribe (5-2) won it with a clean eighth. Trevor Megill then tried to finish his 27th save in 29 chances and nearly watched it blow up. Pedro Ramírez, already a fifth-inning homer guy, sent a one-out drive that Luis Lara robbed with a leaping catch. Pete Crow-Armstrong answered with a 400-foot homer to right-center, the first Megill had allowed all season, and the lead was down to one.

Chourio ended it. Suzuki's fly to left became a diving catch, and Milwaukee walked off the opener of a three-game set with the division math looking cruel for Chicago. Crow-Armstrong had also singled and scored in the seventh after a rough prior stretch against the Brewers this year (4 of 39 with 18 strikeouts before those last two swings).

Boyd held them, then the eighth

Boyd had silenced Milwaukee through seven. The eighth was the whole game. Uribe flipped the win, Megill survived the ninth, and Chourio owned both the go-ahead swing and the last out. Jacob Misiorowski (14-5, 1.87) lines up Tuesday opposite David Peterson (7-8, 5.39). For more Monday NL noise, Philadelphia needed only Schwarber's 43rd. Milwaukee needed Chourio twice in the same late window, bat then glove, and got both.
