Schwarber Homer, Luzardo Shutout Beat Braves 1-0

Kyle Schwarber's MLB-leading 43rd homer was the only run Philadelphia needed as Jesus Luzardo threw the first shutout of his career in a 1-0 win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday, per the Associated Press via ESPN. The Phillies moved to 81-63. Atlanta sits 85-59. The NL East lead is down to four after a four-game split at Citizens Bank Park.

Schwarber got Luzardo the win in the eighth, launching a solo shot into the second deck off Didier Fuentes (5-2). That was the entire offense. It was also enough on a night Luzardo (14-5) needed exactly one swing of cover after another August that already earned him NL pitcher of the month honors.

Luzardo's first shutout in 150 starts

Luzardo struck out 12 and allowed two hits across 109 pitches, 78 of them strikes. He did not walk anyone until the ninth. The whole game lasted 1 hour, 51 minutes. For a lefty the Phillies locked up with a $135 million, five-year deal in March instead of letting him test free agency, this was another night that looked like a Game 1 starter audition taped to a regular-season box score.

Grant Holmes kept Atlanta alive for six innings with three hits, six strikeouts, and no runs. He had already stranded a bases-loaded jam in the first when Bryson Stott lined out to center. Holmes also retired Luiz Arraez to end the seventh with a runner on third. Luzardo simply outlasted him and finished the two-hit gem.

Acuna walks, Albies ends it

Ronald Acuna Jr. drew a walk in the ninth after a weekend of curtain-call heat from the Philadelphia crowd that still remembered Sunday's tying three-run shot. Ozzie Albies flew out to finish it. Elsewhere in the recent slate, Grichuk and Teel had already piled on for the White Sox. Philadelphia's version was quieter, colder, and just as useful: one Schwarber bomb, one Luzardo gem, and four games carved off the division gap heading into a Houston series.
