Cowser Catch Saves Orioles Win Over Rockies

Colton Cowser's leaping catch saved the Orioles in a 2-1 win over the Rockies on Monday night at Coors Field. With two outs, a runner on second, and Baltimore one strike from victory, Jake McCarthy drove a ball above the center-field fence. Cowser raced back, jumped, and pulled it into his glove for the final out.

A walk-off homer became Baltimore's fourth straight win. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz called it "the best play I've ever seen in person." Cowser crashed onto the warning track, held on, and then celebrated as his teammates poured out of the dugout.

Cowser changed the game twice

The catch will own the highlight reel, but Cowser also drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh. After a 98-minute rain delay, Blaze Alexander walked with one out to load the bases. Cowser grounded into what was first called an inning-ending double play. Baltimore challenged, the out at first was overturned, and the Orioles led 2-1.

Dylan Beavers had doubled and scored on Samuel Basallo's double in the fifth to tie the game. Colorado had gone ahead in the fourth when Hunter Goodman doubled and scored on Jordan Beck's two-out single.

Povich and the bullpen made it hold up

Cade Povich worked five innings and allowed one run on five hits. Grant Wolfram pitched two scoreless innings in relief and earned the win, moving to 6-2. Andrew Kittredge handled the ninth for his ninth save, with Cowser supplying an ending no box score can capture.

Kittredge said he could tell Cowser had a good read off the bat, but he did not expect a play like that. McCarthy called it a great play even while admitting how much it hurt. In the moment, with the game and the wild-card race hanging on one swing, Cowser's timing was perfect.

Orioles return to .500 in the wild-card race

Baltimore is 69-69 after winning four straight and six of seven. The Orioles reached .500 for the first time since April 30, when they won the first game of a doubleheader against Houston. They moved within a half-game of idle Cleveland for the final American League wild-card spot.

Colorado's loss was its fifth in a row and its franchise-record 10th consecutive home defeat. The Rockies were one swing from ending both skids. Cowser climbed the fence and took that ending away.

For Baltimore fans watching a tight September race, it was the kind of play that can define a season if the run keeps going. The Orioles did not gain ground with a comfortable win. They stole one at the wall on the final swing.
