Gonzalez Signs $135M Patriots Extension

Christian Gonzalez just became the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL. The Patriots and their star CB agreed to a four-year, $135 million extension with $102 million guaranteed, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler late Monday night into early Tuesday, with CBS Boston and USA Today confirming the numbers on Sep. 8.

That bag tops the four-year, $132 million deal Devon Witherspoon signed with the Seahawks last month. The timing is loud: New England opens the season Wednesday night at Seattle in a Super Bowl rematch at Lumen Field, and Gonzalez already traveled with the team before the agreement landed.

Record CB money, same agent path

Gonzalez, the No. 17 pick in 2023, was eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason. He had been under contract through 2027 after New England exercised his fifth-year option, with scheduled earnings of about $2.26 million in 2026 and $18.11 million in 2027 before this reset. The franchise-tag path for 2028 is off the table now.

Witherspoon and Gonzalez share the same agent, Reggie Johnson, and the Seahawks deal set the market floor. Gonzalez clearing $135 million with $102 million guaranteed answers the biggest offseason question hanging over Foxborough. It also locks an All-Pro and Pro Bowl corner into the Mike Vrabel era before kickoff.

He missed time in camp after a lower-leg injury Aug. 10 working 1-on-1 with A.J. Brown, returned Aug. 24, and stayed on track to play Wednesday. Talks intensified Monday night after he made the trip west. The money clearing before the national window removes the hold-in chatter that had followed him through September.

On June 9 he said he hoped to be rewarded as a Patriot. Tuesday morning that wish became a CB-record check. For a secondary that already leaned on him as a true No. 1, the extension is continuity with a price tag that resets the position market again.

Week 1 context in Seattle

Patriots depth already had September noise. Christian Barmore returned to full practice while Ben Brown stayed out on the early Week 1 sheets, and TreVeyon Henderson looked unlikely for the opener with an ankle issue. Gonzalez's extension is a different kind of roster news: long-term certainty on the boundary.
