Gonzalez Mum on Patriots Week 1 Contract

Christian Gonzalez would not say if he will play Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday night, keeping his answer locked on Saturday's practice while New England's star corner and the front office still have not closed a long-term deal, per Boston.com and Newsweek.

The Super Bowl rematch at Lumen Field already had enough juice. A hold-in cloud on the Patriots' best cover man turns that rematch into a different kind of problem.

Focused on practice, quiet on Week 1

"I'm focused on today right now," Gonzalez said when asked if he might miss the opener in Seattle, per Boston.com. On a possible trade request he stayed in the same lane: "I'm here right now… I'll always be where my feet are and do what I gotta do." Asked if momentum was building toward a new deal before kickoff, he answered, "I don't know."

That is not a soft yes. It is also not a walkout announcement. It is a star corner refusing to rubber-stamp availability four days before the season opener.

Witherspoon market, fifth-year math

Seattle's Devon Witherspoon signed a four-year, $132 million extension in August, resetting the cornerback market Gonzalez is chasing. New England already picked up his fifth-year option earlier this spring, locking him under contract for 2026 and 2027 with a 2027 cap hit that jumps from about $4.8 million to about $18.1 million, per Boston.com. Gonzalez wants the larger extension now, especially after a major role in last year's Super Bowl run.

Eliot Wolf said last month the club felt "positive that we're making momentum." Gonzalez's Saturday answers did not echo that. Mike Vrabel said he communicates how much the team wants to build around Gonzalez but does not run the negotiations, calling it a "delicate balance."
