Kamara Not Expected Week 1 vs Lions

Alvin Kamara is not expected to play Sunday when the New Orleans Saints visit the Detroit Lions in Week 1, Ian Rapoport reported, even after a full practice late in the week on a sprained MCL. He was listed as questionable on the final injury report. Fantasy managers who waited for the "full" stamp still need a Plan B.

That is a sharper update than the earlier questionable label that floated through Friday. Kamara returned to practice this week after the MCL sprain last month, limited for two days, then fully participated Friday. Rapoport's sources say he is simply not quite ready for game action against Detroit. NBC Sports and SI relayed the same not-expected stamp Sunday morning.

Etienne carries the load

Travis Etienne Jr. projects as the top back with Kamara out. Kendre Miller is the other running back on the 53-man roster, and the Saints elevated CJ Donaldson from the practice squad for Sunday. That is a committee built for volume, not a committee built around waiting for Kamara's first snap. Audric Estimé's IR placement already thinned the room before opener week.

Kamara missed the final stretch of 2025 with injuries and is opening his 10th NFL season still ramping. A Week 2 return is possible if the knee responds, but nothing is locked. DFS and redraft rooms that faded Etienne for Kamara's name value should flip that script for one week. Etienne's receiving chops will matter against a Lions front that loads the box on early downs.

What Sunday looks like without 41

Detroit at home is already a tough draw for a Saints offense sorting its Week 1 identity. Without Kamara's route tree out of the backfield, New Orleans leans harder on Etienne between the tackles and on checkdowns. Miller and Donaldson are change-of-pace options, not Kamara clones. Betting boards that still had Kamara priced as a full-game piece need a reset.
