McNeil Walk-Off Lifts A's Past Blue Jays 6-5

Jeff McNeil legged out a bases-loaded infield single with two outs in the ninth and the Athletics walked off the Toronto Blue Jays 6-5 on Monday night in West Sacramento, per the Associated Press.

Toronto had just tied it on Andres Gimenez's solo shot. McNeil's slow roller off Louis Varland (5-5) scored Donovan Walton and ended a Labor Day mess the A's somehow survived.

Bolte chaos, then the collapse

Henry Bolte reached in all five plate appearances, mashed a solo homer, stole three bases, walked three times, and scored three runs. Zack Gelof added two RBIs and two runs. Dylan Cease never found the zone early, and Oakland built a 5-1 lead that looked safe until it was not.

Gimenez jumped on a low curve from Hogan Harris (4-2) and tied it 5-5 with a 415-foot blast in the top of the ninth. Max Muncy then started the bottom half with an infield single. Varland walked Walton and Bolte to load the bases with two outs. McNeil beat the throw. First A's walk-off since June 19.

Oakland has won five of six after a five-game skid. That is not a wild-card surge, but it is a club that refuses to lay down when the calendar says September.

Blue Jays wild-card math

Toronto stayed one game behind Cleveland for the third American League wild card after the Guardians lost to Baltimore earlier Monday. Texas sits 1.5 back of Cleveland. The Blue Jays still have Baltimore this weekend at Rogers Centre, and nights like this are how those margins get ugly.

Cease was not sharp. The defense leaked. The ninth almost saved it. McNeil's hustle made sure it did not. Cleveland already took a hit when Mayo went deep twice for the Orioles, and nights like this keep the math loud.

Monday in West Sacramento belonged to Bolte's five times on and McNeil's last sprint down the line. The A's take the series opener. The Jays leave with another reminder that wild-card leads do not protect you from a slow roller.
