Penix Inactive Week 1; Tua Starts vs Steelers

Michael Penix Jr. will not dress Sunday. Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski said the quarterback will be inactive for the Week 1 trip to Pittsburgh, with Tua Tagovailoa starting and Cooper Rush the backup, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

That locks the depth chart for opener weekend. Naming Tua starter was one beat. Putting Penix on the inactive list is the next one.

Six full practices, not enough

Penix tore his ACL last November. He was cleared for 11-on-11 work Aug. 20 but logged only six full team-period practices. Stefanski said the staff, medical group, and Penix are aligned that he is not ready for live snaps yet.

"Mike is getting better and better and better, and I'm very proud of him for how far he's come," Stefanski said, per AJC. He framed the plan as ongoing and shared, not a surprise demotion.

Atlanta already told the room Tua is the Week 1 starter. Rush absorbing the backup snaps means Penix's first live look waits for a later week when the knee and timing clear the bar the coaches set.

Steelers week without the rehab QB
