Darnold Return Targets Week 4 Chargers

Sam Darnold is recovering from his glute tendon injury faster than expected, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said Sunday the Seattle Seahawks quarterback has a pretty good chance to return to practice this week, with Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers the more likely game target. Rapoport, speaking on NFL GameDay Morning, left the door cracked for a Week 3 look at Washington, calling that timeline possible but a stretch. Drew Lock still starts today's 4:25 p.m. ET road game at Arizona.
That is a real shift from the early chatter that floated a four-to-six-week window after Darnold left the season opener against New England after five snaps. The club never put him on injured reserve, which kept the early-return path open. Today is still Lock's start. The new news is how fast the rehab is moving once Seattle kicks off against the Cardinals.
Week 3 stretch, Week 4 target
Rapoport's Sunday stamp is the cleanest return map fans have had since the injury flipped from a hip label to a glute tendon. Practice in some form this week is now on the board. A Week 3 start against the Commanders on Sept. 27 remains the aggressive ask. Week 4 at home against the Chargers on Oct. 4 is the date most rooms should circle first.
Fantasy boards that already parked Darnold for Arizona can keep him stashed and watch the practice reports. Do not invent a guaranteed Week 3 green light from one optimistic note. Lock has a full week as the starter and already finished the Patriots win after the emergency relief job. Seattle's 11-game win streak equals the franchise record, so Lock is not babysitting a rebuild. He is protecting a heater.
The larger NFC West calendar still includes a Week 5 home date with San Francisco. Getting Darnold back for the Chargers would give him one clean start before that showdown. That is the fan math, not a promise from the building.
Seattle's medical staff already framed the soft-tissue issue as short term when it declined IR. Rapoport's Sunday update simply put dates on that optimism. Practice snaps this week become the next tell. If Darnold is limited or held out again, Week 4 stays the honest circle. If he ramps cleanly, Washington becomes a live conversation, not a fantasy invent.
Lock handles Arizona today
Kickoff at State Farm Stadium is 4:25 p.m. ET. Lock under center. Darnold on the mend. Week 4 is the first date worth penciling until the practice snaps say otherwise.
Faster rehab. Practice buzz. Chargers week circled. That is Seattle's Sunday QB board.
