Seager, Rangers Rout Mariners 10-5

Corey Seager and the Texas Rangers just kept both races loud in Seattle. Seager, Wyatt Langford, and Danny Jansen homered as Texas routed the host Mariners 10-5 on Tuesday, per Reuters Field Level Media.

The Rangers (72-73) won their second straight and sit two games behind the Houston Astros (73-71) in the AL West and 1 1/2 back of the Cleveland Guardians (74-72) for the American League's third wild-card spot. Seattle fell to 67-78 and has lost four of the first five on this homestand.

Seager's early blast, then a five-run fifth

Seager homered with one out in the first off Bryce Miller (4-9), who has lost seven straight decisions since July 9. Langford walked, stole second, and scored on Nicky Lopez's broken-bat single in the second. In the fourth, Justin Foscue's two-run pinch single made it 4-0. After Seattle answered, Texas poured on five in the fifth: Langford's two-run shot and Jansen's three-run blast turned a one-run game into a 9-3 night in a hurry.

Cal Quantrill (8-5) gave Texas six quality innings, allowing three runs on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. It was his fourth win in his last five starts. Miller lasted only 3 2/3 and allowed four runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts.

Montes' 474-footer was not enough

The Mariners' best swing of the night still made the highlight reels. Rookie Lazaro Montes crushed a 474-foot three-run homer in the fourth that cleared the J-Rod Squad section and landed in club seating, the longest Mariners homer at T-Mobile Park since Statcast began measuring in 2015 and tied for the longest blast in the majors this year. It only pulled Seattle within 4-3 before the Rangers' fifth-inning explosion ended the suspense.

For Rangers fans, Tuesday was September baseball with real stakes. Two games out in the West. A game and a half from the last wild card. Seager setting the tone, Langford and Jansen clearing the fences, Quantrill eating innings. Seattle is seven back of Houston and 6 1/2 out of the wild-card picture with four teams between them and Cleveland. Texas is still in the fight. A 10-5 road win with three homers is exactly how you stay there.

Lopez kept showing up in the middle of rallies, and Evan Carter's singles helped pad the late innings. The Mariners scratched single runs in the eighth and ninth, but the deficit was already too big. Defending division champions do not want September nights that look like this at home. The Rangers will take every one of them while the Astros and Guardians stay within reach. Seager's first-inning stamp still set the night. The five-run fifth finished it.
