Story Walk-Off Lifts Red Sox Over Mariners

Trevor Story walked off the Mariners with a bases-loaded single in the 10th inning, lifting the Boston Red Sox to a 9-8 win on Monday night at Fenway Park. Seattle had just walked the two hitters in front of him on purpose. Story lined a 3-2 pitch from Cooper Criswell into the left-center gap, and Fenway sent more than 37,000 people home loud.

It was Story's first game at Fenway since May 14, after sports hernia surgery. He went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. The Red Sox needed every bit of it after dropping three of four to the Yankees over the weekend.

How Story finished the 10th

Nick Sogard laid down a sacrifice. The Mariners then issued two intentional walks to load the bases for Story. Criswell, now 2-2, went to 3-2. Story did not miss it. Aroldis Chapman had already thrown a scoreless top of the 10th and picked up the win, moving to 3-4.

Story had already changed the night once. In the eighth, he bounced a ball off the Green Monster that scored two and cut an 8-5 Seattle lead to 8-7. That swing set up the ninth, and the ninth set up the walk-off.

Roman Anthony forced extra innings

Boston tied it against Andres Munoz in the ninth. Roman Anthony led off with a triple when Seattle center fielder Julio Rodriguez tried a sliding catch and the ball hopped past him. Ceddanne Rafaela's fly to left scored Anthony, who slid around Cal Raleigh's tag at the plate.

Anthony is 4-for-8 with three extra-base hits since returning from a wrist and hand injury that cost him 100 games. "I couldn't really feel my legs," he told MLB.com. "It's been a while since I played baseball in that atmosphere."

What the box score looked like

Jarren Duran hit a two-run homer. Mickey Gasper, just recalled when Willson Contreras went on the injured list with a strained left hamstring, added a solo shot. Randy Arozarena wrecked Boston for most of the night, going 4-for-4 with a homer over the Monster, four RBIs, and three runs. Raleigh hit his 20th homer. Payton Tolle allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings for Boston.

The Mariners have now lost five straight. Boston is 75-63. Seattle is 64-74. The same Monday night also gave the Orioles a 2-1 win on Colton Cowser's leaping catch in Colorado, another September game decided on one swing, or one glove.

Story told MLB.com the return meant a lot after watching from afar. The Red Sox did not need a speech. They needed the 10th-inning single, and they got it.
