Taylor Fritz vs. Arthur Fils: Paris Masters Rematch Preview
By Smacktok
•

Taylor Fritz and Arthur Fils meet in the Paris Masters round of 16 on Thursday, six days after Fils walked off against Fritz in Basel trailing 6-2, 2-0. This time Fils is healthy, he's already booked for Turin, and he'll have the whole building behind him on Court Central.
The stakes are lopsided in the best way. Fils is playing for a home title run. Fritz is playing for his season. The ATP's own scenarios say that if Fritz loses Thursday, Frances Tiafoe clinches a spot at the ATP Finals, and Fritz needs at least a semifinal in Paris to pass Rafael Jodar for the last place.
How Fritz Got Here
It hasn't been pretty, but it's been loud. Fritz dropped the first set in both of his matches this week. He came back on Benjamin Bonzi 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, then fired 37 aces to get past qualifier Alex Molcan 6-7 (6), 7-5, 7-6 (5) on Wednesday.
The worry is his arm. Fritz called the trainer in the first set against Bonzi and later told Tennis Channel he's been feeling a sharp pain in the back of his elbow since Lyon, sometimes on cutter serves and sometimes when he fully straightens it. "It's a sharp pain so I get scared to serve sometimes when I feel like it is there," he said. He still served 37 aces a day later, so take that however you want.
How Fils Got Here
Fils looked like a different guy from the one who quit in Basel. He beat qualifier Tomas Machac 6-3, 7-6 (4) Wednesday night without facing a break point and held all 11 of his service games. Results earlier in the day had already clinched his first ATP Finals spot, making him the first Frenchman to qualify since Gael Monfils in 2016.
About that Basel retirement: Fils said over the weekend it was a muscle problem in his left leg and that stopping was "just a precaution." "Everything is fine, I feel good, my body is fine," he told reporters before the tournament. Wednesday backed that up.
The Head to Head
It's 1-1. Fils won their first meeting 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in Tokyo in 2024, and the Basel retirement went down as a Fritz win. So nobody has really beaten the other one at full strength on a fast indoor court yet.
The matchup is pretty simple on paper. Fritz's serve is the best weapon on the court, and the Paris surface has been playing quick all week. Fils has a crowd that's going to roar on every point he wins, and he looked a lot sharper than Fritz did on Wednesday. If Fritz's elbow flares up, that gap closes fast.
Match time is set for 11:30 a.m. PT on Court Central. The winner likely gets Carlos Alcaraz or Matteo Berrettini in Friday's quarterfinals.
Smacktok pick lean: Lean toward at least one tiebreak in Fritz vs. Fils. Fritz just hit 37 aces against Molcan, and Fils didn't face a single break point against Machac. Holds should come easy for both until somebody blinks.
Fritz needs this one way more than Fils does. That's exactly why it feels like a coin flip.
