Taylor Fritz needed the win more than Arthur Fils, and he took it clean. The 11th seed beat the sixth-seeded Frenchman 6-3, 6-4 in 1 hour and 11 minutes on Court Central on Thursday to reach the Paris Masters quarterfinals, claim his 100th ATP Masters 1000 win, and keep his Nitto ATP Finals hopes alive.

Fils had already locked Turin on Wednesday as the first Frenchman into the season finale since Gael Monfils in 2016. Fritz had not. The American is still chasing the last Race spots, and a straight-sets win over a home favorite who ran out of gas was exactly the statement he needed heading into a Friday date with Carlos Alcaraz.

No Break Points, 100th Masters Win

Fritz never faced a break point. He won 41 of 51 service points, including 11 of 12 on second serve, and hit 14 aces to Fils' six, per Tennis Majors and Infosys ATP Stats. He broke for 4-2 in the first set on his first break point and served it out to love. In the second he broke again for 2-1 after Fils had saved a pair of break points in the opening game, then closed to love with a serve and a crosscourt backhand winner on the first match point.

Winners ran 27-15 for Fritz with 16 unforced errors each. Fils won only one of Fritz's 12 second-serve points. A week after retiring against Fritz in the Basel quarterfinals while trailing 6-2, 2-0, the Frenchman never found a look on return.

Turin Math Still Alive

Fritz sits on about 3,050 Race points after Thursday. He would pass Rafael Jodar (3,234) by reaching the semifinals and Frances Tiafoe (3,390) by reaching the final. Had Fils won, Tiafoe would have qualified Thursday. Tommy Paul is still in the mix on about 2,925 but needs a final; he faces Ben Shelton in the other quarterfinal.

"I was returning really well and serving really well," Fritz said. "That kind of takes care of itself when I am serving well and playing aggressively. It was fast conditions, and it really enabled me when I stepped in and went for the shots."

Next: Alcaraz in the Quarters

Alcaraz advanced when Matteo Berrettini withdrew before their round-of-16 match. The second seed leads Fritz 6-1 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head. Fritz is into his second Masters 1000 quarterfinal of the season after Cincinnati and his 16th overall. Fils' exit leaves Luca Van Assche as the last Frenchman in the singles draw.

"I am excited for it," Fritz said of Alcaraz. "Excited for the opportunity. That's why I have gotten to this point in the tournament. I knew I was probably gonna have to go through him if I wanted to [have the chance] to make Turin. So, I'm ready to play."

Smacktok pick lean: Lean higher on Fritz first-serve points won. He faced zero break points, won 41 of 51 service points, and is riding Tour-leading indoor form into the Alcaraz match.

A 100th Masters win that keeps Turin alive against a tired home seed is the kind of Thursday that sets up a real Friday.
