Tommy Paul Beats Halys to Reach Paris Masters QF
By Smacktok
•

Tommy Paul never broke Quentin Halys until the last game, then walked off Court Central with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win and a Paris Masters quarterfinal berth. The 12th seed held serve all match, won 43 of 45 first-serve points, and kept his ATP Finals hopes alive in 1 hour and 36 minutes on Thursday.
It matches Paul's best Paris result, which he first reached in 2022. Next up is third seed Ben Shelton, who beat Arthur Rinderknech earlier Thursday. For Paul, every win still matters in the Race to Turin.
Serve Carried the Day
Halys saved seven of eight break points and hit 16 aces to Paul's 14, but he could not get Paul off balance. The American faced just one break point, in the second game, and saved it. He held to love three times in a row in the first set.
The tiebreak flipped fast. Paul trailed 0-1, then won six straight points to lead 6-1. Halys saved two set points on his serve before Paul closed it 7-3. In the second set, Halys climbed out of 0-40 to hold at 2-2, then led 30-0 serving at 4-5. Paul took the next three points, forced match point, and converted the second one for the only break of the match. Final tally: 36 winners and 14 unforced errors for Paul, 29 and 21 for Halys, per Tennis Majors.
Turin Math Still Alive
The win pushed Paul to about 2,925 points in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin, still needing a deep run to crack the top nine with Jannik Sinner out for the season. He opened Paris by beating 2022 champion Holger Rune 7-5, 6-4, then Daniel Merida 6-1, 6-1. His only title this year came in Houston, with finals in Delray Beach, Hamburg, and at Queen's.
Halys had no complaints. "I played a very good match. He was simply too strong today," the Frenchman said. He had saved four match points to upset Frances Tiafoe in the prior round, the biggest win of his career, before running into Paul at full clip.
What Comes Next
Paul and Shelton have never met in a Masters quarterfinal in Paris. Shelton is the higher seed and the bigger lefty serve. Paul's first-serve percentage against Halys is the number to watch again. If he keeps holding like that, this quarterfinal gets interesting fast.
Smacktok pick lean: Lean higher on Paul's first-serve points won. He lost only two of 45 against Halys, and that form travels into a Shelton rematch.
Paul's Turin window is still open. A quarterfinal win would make the math a lot less stressful.
